Facts To Know Before Ordering Fasteners

Fasteners are crucial to modern living. They can be found everywhere around us, and they play essential roles in various industries and economics all over the world. Before you get to ordering fasteners, here are some facts you need to know about them.

What Are Fasteners?

Fasteners are  hardware devices that function to permanently or non-permanently join two or more components together. A non-permanent fastener is one that can be dismantled easily without destroying or otherwise damaging the fasteners or the component  it is joining.  Separating components of a permanent joint would cause damage to both the components as well as the joint itself.  A permanent fastener like an eyelet, grommet or rivet join components together and cannot be separated without causing significant damage to the fastener or the product.  Non permanent fasteners are designed with screw threads and each fastener is typically composed of an external, male part and an internal, female part. The male part is typically a screw and the female part is typically either a hole or a nut. An example would be  Chicago Screw or also called Post and Screw fasteners.

Fasteners are manufactured using a wide variety of materials, like brass, alloy steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, plastic, and aluminum. They will also be coated with another material and there are many materials that are used for coating. For example, a fastener could have nickel plating, phosphate plating, cadmium plating, silver plating, zinc plating, black oxidizing, chromium plating, etc.

Importance of Fasteners

They are so versatile that they can be found everywhere, even in your own home. The table you eat at, the bed you sleep in, and even the vehicle you travel with is held together by fasteners. Nearly everything that is man-made around you requires the use of the fasteners.

Different Types of Fasteners

Judging by the wide variety of applications that fasteners have, it is no surprise that there are many different types of fasteners out there. Anyone who works with fasteners would understand how distinctive each type of fastener is and how this allows it to be identified and used in specific projects.

Here are some of the most commonly used fasteners that can be seen in our day-to-day lives: grommets, eyelets, rivet, clamps, snaps , screws, bolts, flats, tapping screws, set screws, studs, nuts, clamps, anchors, pins, rings, clips, staples, rods, etc. As you can see, there are a lot. In this post, we will just focus on eyelets, grommets and rivets .

  • Grommets: Grommets and washers are metal rings that are used in a variety of everyday products and are used primarily to reinforce a hole in a product like a shower curtain, drapes, flags, banners, tarps, awnings and laundry bags.  They are made in a variety of metals with brass being the most common and are supplied in many different plated and painted finishes. They are considered permanent fasteners and cannot be easily extracted.
  • Eyelets:   Eyelets are very similar to grommets and the basic difference is that an eyelet has a smaller flange in relation to the hole size than a grommet. Because of this, they are used in applications that do not require extreme holding strength. Eyelets can be found in everyday products like clothing, belts, shoes, sneakers, hoodies, and almost all electronic household appliances. computer boards, cell phones, calendars, recipe cards and hundreds of other everyday products.  They are made in a variety of metals with brass being the most common and are supplied in many different plated and painted finishes. They are considered permanent fasteners and cannot be easily extracted.
  • Rivets: Rivets are similar  to eyelets but they do not have a hole running all the way thru them. They are like an eyelet that has a cap on one side. They are used to hold many types of leather goods together like ladies hand bags, men’s and ladies belts, dog or cat collars or any other type of strapping that requires a buckle.  Certain types are used to reinforce   blue jean pockets. Smaller rivets are also used in many electrical appliances.   They are made in a variety of metals with brass being the most common and are supplied in many different plated and painted finishes. They are considered permanent fasteners and cannot be easily extracted.
